Every research project and consulting engagement is ultimately a collaboration between us and the client wherein we each bring specific knowledge, skills, and resources to accomplish an objective.
One of the areas of knowledge that is always critical to success is an understanding of the nature and nuances of a client's industry: competitive structure, value chain, buying patterns and cycles, customer types, regulatory influences, and a host of other factors -- not to mention the specialized language and terminology that only insiders know.
Many clients prefer to carry the responsibility for bringing the industry expertise to the table, and we always respect that our clients will know more about their industry and business than we do.
On the other hand, it is usually helpful if the research/consulting partner comes to the engagement with a basic working knowledge of the industry, and especially experience in conducting primary research with the types of customers and distribution channels the client deals with every day.
